Rot and defects

Rot had begun at the screw holes, mortise pockets and bolt openings and spread outwards. Some posts carried little rot and a few small buried screws; the rest had at least one face crowded with screws, rotted mortise remains and old cladding fragments. Slicing showed for the first time how far the decay ran.

What this piece has been

Enclosure posts of the Woodchip Barn until it was dismantled; then a pile of single pieces beside the old site; then the main stock of the first Wood Store cell. Gluing makes the lamellae one piece, and salvaged and new timber leave the planer looking similar, so the layup map drawn while the layers were on the bench is what marks the salvaged layers, the jointed pairs, the scarf repairs, and the point where the new timber begins.
